Did your child's school participate in Celebrate Freedom Week last month? (If not, why not?)
According to the Texas Education Code section 29.907 "To educate students about the sacrifices made for freedom in the founding of this country and the values on which this country was founded, the week in which September 17 falls is designated as Celebrate Freedom Week in public schools." (September 17 is also Constitution Day, which is why that week was chosen to be Celebrate Freedom Week.)
Section 29.9071 also establishes a Texas Military Heroes Day every year for every school "To educate students about the sacrifices made by brave Texans who have served in the armed forces of the United States, the governor shall designate a day to be known as Texas Military Heroes Day in public schools."
So, patriotism and educating students about about our country's true values and the sacrifices so many have made to ensure those values is written in to the Texas Education Code and put on the Texas Education Agency website. Are these events being celebrated in your child's school?
I would encourage all parents to continue to teach your own children about the values our country upholds and the values that so many have died to protect. Exercise your right to free speech at your next School Board meeting! What a lesson about patriotic citizenship for your children!!
