Kids can check these books out without their parents' knowledge or permission. They can also read them in the library without checking them out.
Please note that there are only a few weeks of school left and students are being asked to turn all of their books in to the library for the final inventory of books. Just because books aren't checked out right now, that doesn't mean kids aren't checking them out OR just reading them in the library. Just remember that these books are being made AVAILABLE to kids for them to read without their parents' knowledge or permission.
These books have gender/transgender themes, fictional police brutality including shootings of children, abortion, profanity, alcohol and drug use, visual and/or written graphic descriptions of sex/rape/pedophilia, etc. Please be warned!
Scanned pages from the books are included. Please note that this is not ALL of the inappropriate content in these books; it's just a snapshot. Some books have a lot of scanned pages, and some just have just a few in the interest of space on this blog. All of these have inappropriate content all throughout the book!

There is also a Check Please! Book 1 with the same gay college hockey teen and profanity in it. Is that book being ordered for the library next year?

Who are the discussion questions for at the end of the book? Are these for teachers who read the book to/with their students????????

At the end of the book, there are many resources for kids ( and teachers, maybe).

This book gives kids resources they can look up without their parents' knowledge. Let's look at one of these they list on the above page, The Trevor Project:
When kids log on to The Trevor Project website, they learn how to quickly exit the site (in case their parents walk up behind them, I suppose):

Kids can reach out to a counselor and talk with that counselor without their parents knowing about it:

Kids also can look up resources:

Here are results when I searched under "religion":

Kids can also "Meet Friends" on a chat group called TrevorSpace:

Here on the TrevorSpace chat group, 13-year-old transgender, lesbian, gay etc. kids can talk with 24-year-olds. All without their parents' knowledge or permission! What could possibly go wrong? Of course, people older than 24 can be in this chat group as well.
The book continues with more resources for kids including a YouTube video and a list of books with LGBTQ characters.

This book is in the Goshen Creek Elementary School Library in the Easy section of picture books. If kids are checking out this book to read, why are there discussion questions at the end of the book? Are teachers checking this book out to read to their class and then have a discussion about it? Is the librarian reading it to kids when they come to the library as a class?

These are just SOME of the extremely inappropriate books that Springtown ISD students are checking out of their school libraries without their parents' knowledge or consent.
I have been researching these books in various school districts including urban, suburban, and rural districts of various sizes all over Texas the past three years. I have noticed that inappropriate library books tend to be ordered for school libraries in stages. This is a chart I created to show these stages of inappropriate school library book acquisition:

After doing a deep dive into Springtown ISD school library books via their online library catalogs, I would say that Springtown ISD school libraries are in between stages 2 and 3.
What can parents in Springtown ISD do?
· Tell the school that your child is not allowed to check out any books in the library or read any books in the library. You will provide books from home for silent reading time at school. Send an email to the principal, classroom teacher/s, and school librarian so you have it for documentation. Teachers sometimes have books like this in their classroom libraries, so you can include that your child cannot read books in the teacher's classroom library either.
· Email your concerns to the campus principal and district superintendent.
· Sign up to voice your concerns at the school board meeting.
· Share this information with other parents, church pastors, neighbors, etc.
· Form a group of concerned parents to work together to fill out library book reconsideration forms to get the books removed and to support each other when speaking at school board meetings. There is strength in numbers, and if only a few people show up to the meetings the school board will assume that most people don't care.
· Help get conservative candidates elected to the school board. Volunteer to help their campaigns by putting up yard signs, knocking on doors, helping with text messaging campaigns or voicemail campaigns, helping with clerical duties at their campaign headquarters, etc.
What else is going on in your child's school? Get informed and get involved!
