Classroom Health and Sex Ed Committee at Northeast ISD

Have you looked at the minutes from your School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) committees lately?

From the SHAC page, click on committee notes at the bottom to see meeting notes from the various committees.

During the meeting on September 1, 2023 the Committee discussed revisions to the sex education curriculum. Notice that students are being directed to ask questions that are outside the "scope" of the lessons to a parent/guardian OR OTHER TRUSTED ADULT. Which adults do you want talking to your kids about this? Which "trusted adults" are they talking about? Adults at school, perhaps? Also, notice the lesson on sexual abuse. This is for 6th graders as well. Don't you want to know what the "lesson and associated activities regarding sexual abuse" are? Remember that parents in Texas can opt their kids out of sex education! When they send out notification emails regarding sex education, make sure to read them CAREFULLY. They might say, "Failure to respond to this email confirms your permission for your child to receive sex education including information about sexual violence/abuse and human trafficking at school." There are other ways they try to trick parents into giving permission, so read everything carefully and work with other parents on this. You might want to look at minutes of committee meetings going forward to make certain you know what they are discussing!
